Roe deer hunting for young hunters – tips & equipment

#YOUNGHUNTERSGUIDE – Episode 6

Why hunt roe deer?

Roe deer are the most widespread ungulate species in Central Europe. To prevent browsing damage to natural forest regeneration and to maintain a sustainable forest-wildlife balance, regulated hunting is essential.

Identifying roe deer & selecting the right animal

Christian gives hands-on guidance on how to properly identify bucks, does and yearlings:

  • Based on body structure, head, neck, rump patch and behavior

  • Antler features and suggestions for age estimation

  • Coat changes as age indicators (e.g. yealings change coat earlier)
Important note: Accurate age determination is only approximate – aim for trends, not certainty

Shot placement & legally compliant ammunition

For ethical shot, Anne explains the optimal point of impact:

  • Aim just behind the front leg, drawing a line toward the rump patch

  • Watch the shot reactions (signs), mark the shot location if needed

  • § 19 BJagdG: especially consideration of minimum energy and diameter requirements

Chris stellt seine erprobte Munition vor:

  • GECO ZERO – lead-free fragmenting bullet with flat trajectory

  • GECO STAR – lead-free deformation bullet à now also available in 6.5 Creedmoor
Both are ideally suited for practical, ethical roe deer hunting
