IS THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT TRUE: THE HIGHER A BULLET’S ENERGY VALUE, THE MORE EFFICIENTLY IT WILL KILL THE GAME?

That is too much of a sweeping statement. It is always important to consider how the bullet is engineered as well. A hard bullet with a lot of energy will not necessarily be the best choice for game with soft connective tissue such as deer, as the bullet will not be able to transfer as much of its energy as possible to the body of the game.

DO THE ENERGY VALUES FOR THE INDIVIDUAL GECO BULLETS ON THE GECO WEBSITE OR IN THE GECO CATALOGUE REFER TO THE TRANSFER OF ENERGY TO THE GAME OR DOES THIS MEAN THE KINETIC ENERGY?

The energy information on the GECO website and in the GECO catalogue always refer to the moment of impact on the body of the animal, depending on the bullet velocity.

WHY IS THE BALLISTIC DATA ALWAYS CALCULATED FOR RIFLE AMMUNITION BASED ON A BARREL LENGTH OF 600 MM OR 650 MM?

This is due to specific requirements imposed by the C.I.P. – the standardisation institute for ammunition. These regulations specify standardised barrel lengths of 600 mm for standard calibres and 650 mm for Magnum calibres.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE BALLISTIC DATA FOR THE INDIVIDUAL GECO CARTRIDGES?

You will find the ballistic data for all GECO cartridges in the product description that we provide on our website for every single GECO cartridge.

WHY ARE THERE SOMETIMES DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE BALLISTIC DATA ON THE WEBSITE AND ON THE PACKAGING?

Our GECO cartridges are subject to a permanent optimisation process in terms of their engineering, load and ballistics, etc. In some cases, this may lead to changes in the ballistic data. Where minor deviations of this occur, we make sure that they are added to the data for the individual bullets on our website!

WHICH HANDGUN CARTRIDGES ARE A GOOD CHOICE FOR COMPETITIONS THAT REQUIRE A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCURACY?

The HEXAGON series handgun cartridges are among the excellent choices here. They are innovative, high-performance cartridges that meet the most ambitious sporting standards. The highly aerodynamic shape together with the stabilising grooves ensure ideal flight trajectories.

WHICH HANDGUN CARTRIDGES ARE BEST SUITED FOR A HEAVY PRACTICE SCHEDULE?

The DTX series cartridges in 9 mm Luger are the best choice for a heavy practice schedule, e.g. during preparations for IPSC championships. Taking a look at the FULL METAL JACKET series may be worthwhile for other calibres.

IS LEAD-FREE HANDGUN AMMUNITION AVAILABLE?

Yes! The ACTION EXTREME series comprises two completely lead-free cartridge types that are excellently suited for placing the coup de grace. Our new ACTION EXTREME FRAGMENTATION series is a fragmenting solid copper bullet

WHAT IS “GREEN FIRE TECHNOLOGY”?

Labelling a product as a member of the GREEN FIRE TECHNOLOGY family means that it contains an unleaded SINTOX percussion cap, which significantly reduces the shooter’s exposure to lead at the shooting range.

HIGH AMMUNITION CONSUMPTION WITH HEAVY DUST CONTAMINATION AT THE RANGE?

The GECO portfolio includes numerous alternatives to leaded full metal jacket bullets. For instance, shooters can select wither cartridges with “GREEN FIRE“ or products with reduced lead contents.

WHICH HANDGUN CARTRIDGES ARE BEST SUITED FOR DYNAMIC SHOOTING?

For dynamic disciplines, we recommend standard full metal jacket bullets, copper-plated bullets and encapsulated full metal jacket bullets. They deliver good accuracy with excellent value for money and are therefore absolutely appropriate for dynamic settings with high ammunition consumption.

WHICH HANDGUN CARTRIDGES BY GECO AM I ALLOWED TO USE FOR A COUP DE GRACE?

Section 19 Federal Hunting Act (BJagdG) stipulates a minimum energy at the muzzle of at least 200 joules (Austria 250 J) for a coup de grace with a pistol or revolver. This value is achieved by almost every cartridge in the GECO range, although the cartridges in the ACTION EXTREME series are particularly suitable for the coup de grace. These bullets in particular exhibit excellent stopping power and steady performance for a variety of barrel lengths.

WHY IS THE BALLISTIC DATA CALCULATED FOR HANDGUNS BASED ON A BARREL LENGTH OF 150 MM?

This is due to specific requirements imposed by the C.I.P. – the standardisation institute for ammunition. These regulations specify standardised barrel lengths of 150 mm for handgun calibres. This is why the values for different firearms (e.g. lever-action guns with long barrel, or revolver with cylinder gap and short barrel) may vary, sometimes considerably.

WILL MY FIREARM REQUIRE MORE LABORIOUS CLEANING IF I USE LEAD-FREE GECO CARTRIDGES?

Chemical cleaning is not necessary when using our GECO ZERO, as the bullet is unable to leave any abrasive marks in the barrel that might impair its functions. When using the GECO STAR for hunting, it is advisable to carry out chemical cleaning after around 40 shots.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEAD-FREE, MONOLITHIC BULLETS AND JACKETED BULLETS?

A monolithic bullet is made of just one material, which is high-purity copper in the case of our GECO STAR. Jacketed bullets like our GECO ZERO consist of at least a core and a bullet jacket.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PRODUCTS TO CLEAN THE BARREL WHEN USING LEAD-FREE BULLETS BY GECO?

We recommend that you use a chemical agent to clean the firearm after around 40 shots when using copper bullets like our GECO STAR. A wide variety of cleaning products are available for this purpose. It is important that the agent is able to remove copper deposits and is suitable for your particular barrel. Laborious chemical cleaning is not necessary for our GECO ZERO, a lead-free jacketed bullet. We recommend that you simply clean the barrel in the usual way.

WHAT MATERIALS ARE GECO’S LEAD-FREE BULLETS MADE OF?

The GECO ZERO has a tombac-plated mild steel jacket – comparable to some leaded bullets, which positively impacts the extent of necessary cleaning – and two cores made of tin. As a monolithic, solid projectile, our GECO STAR is made of high-purity copper.

HAVE TEST RESULTS BEEN PUBLISHED ON THE GECO LEAD-FREE AMMUNITION?

Experience has shown the benefit that laborious chemical cleaning is no longer necessary when changing to or using our lead-free jacketed bullet GECO ZERO. The reason: the GECO ZERO has a bullet jacket that is comparable to that of a conventional lead bullet. This means it can be used in almost the same way as standard hunting bullets or even at the same time.

WHICH LEAD-FREE RIFLE CARTRIDGES IS GECO CURRENTLY MARKETING?

Our GECO portfolio currently includes two lead-free hunting bullets. First we have the GECO ZERO, a partial fragmentation bullet with defined residual body, consisting of a rifled bullet jacket and 2 tin cores. Then there is the GECO STAR deformation bullet that is engineered on the basis of a monolithic, solid copper projectile.

WHICH CHANGES HAVE THERE BEEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE NEW GECO PRODUCT PACKAGING?

We have revised the GECO product packaging to help hunters and sport shooters find what they need. That’s why a new colour coding system has been added to the packaging. Hunting ammunition is now red, and sport shooting ammunition is black. Optics products, on the other hand, will arrive in white packaging in future.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A PRODUCT TO BE UNAVAILABLE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD?

When demand spikes, the individual GECO loads are usually prioritised in production. But we still make every effort to ensure ideal availability of our entire portfolio. If you shoot a “rare calibre”, however, it can be wise to keep a small stock of supplies for your own needs.

AS A CONSUMER, CAN I BUY PRODUCTS DIRECTLY FROM GECO?

Sadly, no. GECO ammunition is not sold directly to consumers. You can purchase all GECO products from specialist firearm and ammunition dealers.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE THE GECO AMMUNITION I ORDER FROM A SPECIALIST DEALER?

It is our declared goal to deliver the product you order as quickly as possible. We make every effort to ensure prompt fulfilment of all orders. This means that the ammunition will arrive at your specialist dealer 3–5 days after it becomes available. Sometimes, however, there may be a bottleneck due to increased demand that might cause the occasional delay in the delivery of your ammunition. Your dealer will usually be able to provide information about delayed delivery dates.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE AMMUNITION IS OBVIOUSLY FAULTY?

With more than 130 years of experience and expertise, GECO today offers a modern and wide portfolio of ammunition for hunters and sport shooters around the world. WHAT DO I DO ABOUT ACCURACY ISSUES?

If there is a noticeable change in the shot group and the accuracy fluctuates, please check the firm connection of the mounting elements first, as well as for any barrel contamination due to bullet abrasion. The mount should be anchored firmly in place and not show any slackness. There may also be an error in the optics. It is often helpful in these cases to aim at a straight wall to rule out any misalignment of the optics. Aside from the mount and the optics, it is also important to check that the firearm system is firmly connected to the stock. If all of these points are in order, we advise you to contact your trusted dealer or gunsmith. After ruling out any mechanical faults, they will get in touch with us directly if necessary to clarify any questions concerning the ammunition. By the way, you will find a broad range of GECO optics for hunting and sport shooting, in addition to our proven ammunition.

WHAT MUST I DO IF THE AMMUNITION FAILS?

There can be a variety of causes for misfires. Misfires can be caused either by the firearm or by improper handling. For instance, misfires can occur when the bolt is not 100% locked. It is often difficult to determine how much of a role the ammunition plays, since it often depends on interactions within the entire system. The support can also influence how the firearm works as the bolt handle is pressed upwards, which minimises the impact energy. All other questions are usually very specific, so you should mainly contact your trusted dealer or gunsmith. They will then get in touch with us if necessary.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT MALFUNCTIONS?

If malfunctions occur, the first thing is to make sure that safety is preserved at all times or restored (lock/unload the firearm, among other things). As a rule, it is imperative to check that rifles and handguns are free of gummy oil and foreign bodies. All moving parts should be coated with a light film of oil. If a malfunction occurs nonetheless, we advise you to contact your trusted dealer or gunsmith. They will then get in touch with us if necessary.

FOR HOW LONG CAN I STORE AMMUNITION WITHOUT TAKING AWAY FROM ITS FUNCTIONS OR SAFETY?

It is advisable to shoot ammunition within 10 years, and it must be kept in a dry place.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO STORE MY GECO AMMUNITION?

The ideal ambient conditions for storing GECO ammunition are a temperature of 20°C and relative humidity of 65%. These are usually the normal conditions in indoor rooms.

HOW OFTEN CAN A GECO CARTIRDGE CASE BE REUSED?

GECO cartridge cases can be reused as often as you like, provided they remain in a suitable condition. Reusing a cartridge case depends on many factors, so it is not possible to provide a general answer that covers all eventualities. As a rule, the following should be considered and checked before reloading the cartridge case:

  • To what extent is the material showing signs of wear, especially around the case neck?
  • Has the case mouth/case neck become brittle, or is perhaps a crack even noticeable?
  • Does the length of the cartridge case still match the production details?

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN A LOADING CHART?

The following information should be included in a loading chart:

  • the industry-standard designation of the cartridge
  • the length of the cartridge
  • the length of the cartridge case
  • the type of percussion cap
  • the powder sort and quantity
  • the bullet type and weight

You will find all you need to know about reloading with GECO and the corresponding values in our reloading data.

WHICH RELOADING COMPONENTS ARE AVAILABLE FROM GECO?

The high-tech components guarantee extremely easy assembly and impress with their optimised sensitivity. GECO’S portfolio includes bullets for rifle cartridges andpercussion caps and offers bullets, cases, and suitable percussion caps for handgun ammunition.

IS IT PERMITTED TO INTERPRET THE QUANTITY DETAILS PROVIDED FOR RELOADING?

Quantity details in the reloading data should not be interpreted. The regulations enshrined in law must always be adhered to, so you must comply with the load quantities and manufacturers’ details. In many cases, this information already takes into account several different bullet weights or calibres. We recommend that you take a look at our GECO reloading data.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE INFORMATION ABOUT RELOADING GECO PRODUCTS?

No. At present, no specific GECO guides are available. However, we do provide a comprehensive list with load data for our proven reloading bullets.

CAN GECO SPORT AMMUNITION ALSO BE USED FOR HUNTING?

GECO sport ammunition is not suitable for hunting. We offer 5 different GECO bullet lines for hunters who care about quality as well as the price. GECO STAR and GECO ZERO are the lead-free alternatives in our portfolio. Besides them, we also have the conventional bullets in the GECO EXPRESS, GECO PLUS and GECO SOFTPOINT lines.  In doing so, GECO opens the doors to the world of hunting and guarantees the best possible experience out in the field.

AS AN IPSC SHOOTER, I NEED SUITABLE AND – BECAUSE I USE SO MUCH – INEXPENSIVE PRODUCTS. WHERE WILL I STRIKE LUCKY?

We launched our GECO DTX line specifically for shooters who practice frequently and therefore use a lot of ammunition. Besides prefab cartridges, we also offer reloading components. Our portfolio for handgun shooters includes bullets, percussion caps and the matching cartridge cases for specific uses. Dealers are usually willing to offer good prices or attractive discounts on bulk purchases.

WHICH GECO BULLET LINES ARE BEST SUITED FOR STRICT ACCURACY REQUIREMENTS?

Our GECO HEXAGON cartridges are engineered to satisfy the highest standards of accuracy. This makes them first choice for all high-precision handgun disciplines like DSB and BDS, etc. (Bianchi CUP, PPC 1500, etc.).

WHICH GECO CARTRIDGES ARE PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR INTENSE PRACTICE AND EXTENDED PLINKING SESSIONS?

For the small calibre or .22lr range, we can recommend the two ammunition lines GECO SEMI-AUTO and GECO RIFLE with their great value for money. Cartridges in the GECO DTX family and standard FMJ shells are particularly suitable for handgun disciplines. For standard-calibre rifles, we would also suggest using the GECO DTX, GECO SPORT or GECO TARGET FMJ lines as good-value practice ammunition.

IS GECO STILL INVOLVED IN TOP-LEVEL SPORTS?

GECO offers a full portfolio for active and modern sport shooters – also in top-level sports. In addition, GECO has been the official ammunition supplier for many major IPSC events in the past, including the European and World Championships and is committed to the world of dynamic sport shooting far beyond its portfolio of specialised ammunition. For instance, we sponsor selected top IPSC shooters such as Luis Ehrhardt, Sascha Back, Patrick Kummer, Gyorgy Batki and Csaba Szászi.

Why does GECO offer two different products in the DYNAMIC BIRD SHOT series?

The difference in shot size and weight means that shooters can select the GECO DYNAMIC BIRD SHOT 29 12/65 2.75 mm or the GECO DYNAMIC BIRD SHOT 31 12/65 2.9 mm to suit the specific distance when shooting dropping targets and in dynamic competitions. The short casing also guarantees a higher capacity in tubular magazines. GECO paid particular attention to ensuring that they work reliably in sensitive semi-automatics as well.

Can GECO shotgun shells be used for hunting?

No. Our GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUG BLACK 26, GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUG RED 28, GECO COATED COMPETITION BUCKSHOT, GECO DYNAMIC BIRD SHOT shotgun shells are only engineered for match settings and must not be used for hunting. Match settings include all uses within dynamic shotgun shooting.

Why does GECO offer two different bullet weights for the GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUGS?

The lighter GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUG BLACK 26 for shotgun barrels works perfectly in most semi-automatic shotguns that are designed for match settings. A particularly welcome attribute is its low recoil for a fast rate of fire. But some shotgun models require a more powerful kick to function safely. In this case we recommend our GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUG RED 28, which is specially optimised for safe operation in sensitive semi-automatic firearms.

Can the GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUGS BLACK 26 and RED 28 also be fired from guns with full choke?

Yes, our GECO COATED COMPETITION SLUGS are specifically engineered so that they can also be shot from full choke guns without causing any problems. Based on our extensive testing and experience, we recommend using more open choke tubes (cylinder, skeet, ¼) to improve the shooting performance.
