Hunting Story

At one with nature ...

Lina grew up on a farm with cattle and chickens, so the sustainable production of animal food has always featured in her life. Ultimately, hunting and beekeeping enabled the 25-year-old to take another step towards self-sufficiency. She earned her hunting licence in November 2020 as the first member of her family.

FROM HUNTING TO BEE COLONIES: FASCINATED BY NATURE

Lina has kept her own bee colonies since last year. “My partner has been a passionate hunter for eight years, so he was the one who got me interested. He started by taking me along and letting me look over his shoulder. I was astonished to see how multifaceted hunting is and can be. All the things you have to know about nature and game really drew me in, and so I decided to earn my hunting licence as well,” says Lina. Since then she has become even more careful about what she eats. “A mindful approach to living creatures – including sensible use of their resources – is particularly close to my heart, which is why I picked the GECO PLUS as a deformation bullet that combines effectiveness with good preservation of the game meat.”

PREFERABLY ACTIVE

Lina has a licence to hunt in a small game area and also joins friends to hunt larger game (fallow deer), but prefers not to name any favourite species, “... because every type of game has its own particular charms.” But her preferred time to hunt is during the summer months when the animals are especially active and there’s plenty to see and discover. “One of the nicest ways to wind down from a busy day is to sit up in the blind and delight at the innumerable facets of the terrain and game species. It really isn’t about bagging animals, but enjoying the experience,” says the full-time paramedic.

HUNTING IS HER ELIXIR

The most memorable hunting experience so far was taking down her first buck, an eligible yearling. Accompanied by her boyfriend, Lina bagged the animal in her local hunting grounds on the glorious evening of 14 May 2021. “It was still warm and sunny, and I had enough time to get the buck in my sights. We’d already seen it there and we knew it was up for grabs. So when he showed up that evening, I was able to release a shot from 80 metres in no time at all. The buck was right in the firing line – and we could not have been more delighted.”

THE BEST WAY IS TO DROP THEM IN THEIR TRACKS

The hunter also cares about taking game down on the spot or after only a short flight, which is reflected in her choice of bullet. “It’s important to me that the ammunition preserves the game meat, but still has enough of a punch to prevent an extended flight. I can be certain of that with GECO Plus – so I use the rounds for light deer as well as for more resilient fallow deer.” And although Lina prefers to hunt in her familiar small game area, the ammunition should be versatile enough to work on light to heavy game as well.

THE STRENGTH OF COMMUNITY

Preserving traditions, the sense of cohesion and the pleasant banter are more important than hunting success – whether it’s after a thrilling driven hunt or a relaxed warm summer evening perched up in the blind. It’s about the big picture, after all. “I really appreciated the open and welcoming community I experienced as a novice hunter. Prejudice and envy have no place in hunting if you ask me,” emphasises Lina.
